Family Council Calendar
Calendar
The Family Council calendar is reviewed weekly.
We post a monthly calendar in a public place - refrigerator or on a share site online that can be used for additions/changes/deletions during the week. (Google calendars can have a color for each family member.) This calendar is brought to Family Council for review, coordination/deconflicting's and refinement.

We recommend that school age children have and bring their own calendar to  Family Council to insure their school, athletic and church events are incorporated in the family planning.
The calendaring can be reviewed at several levels, weekly, monthly and annually.
The issues of timing, transportation, other resources and family support at events are all discussed in detail.
           Weekly
Review weekly calendar events in detail – time, travel and resources that may be needed.
It is interesting with a large family to see the number of times we have been over booked with the interests of church, school, and sports etc.  When scheduling conflicts arise, we try to resolve them on the spot.  Sometimes we called those in charge to point out the conflicts.  If there were things, like sporting events, that the parents could not attend  we sent an older child as a representative.

            Monthly
At least once a month look ahead two or three months to see if the plans still work.

            Annually
We recommend you have a calendaring session as part of a special Family Council during the beginning of each year.  Use school and church calendars if they are available.  Layout the plans for big events and known family events like vacations, school calendars/events, and church events i.e. youth events, camps, youth conference etc.
We also encouraged the children to have their own personal calendar.  (A calendar is great stocking stuffers.)  Susan and I use time management systems/mobile phones.  We have found the children can manage their own calendar by age 12 to 14 depending on their personality.  They need to be responsible for their own time by 16 years.
Note: Some extended family members use Google Calendar to keep the family in Sync.  They use a different color for each family member and one color for joint family activities.  This works great for families with tech savvy children and smartphones. Everyone brings their smartphone to the Family Council to discuss details as mentioned above.

Caution: Calendaring is not the main function of Family Councils so be sure to balance the meeting.  The calendar should take less than 1/3 of the time. Do not make this task the major event of the Family Council.
