Giving each family members jobs/tasks in the family helps develop responsible adults.  Begin with the end in mind.
We found that even small children love to have a job in the council.  We had them be in charge of assigning others to write to the grandparents or decide who was to give the prayer at the end of the meeting.  
We also found writing down a job description was useful to define expectations and training as job were rotated

Our family had migrated to digital calendars.   We use Google Calendar with its features and functions.  Each member of the family has chosen a different color.  We also have one color for family activities.  Because this calendar is stored in the cloud we all have access to it on our smartphone.  It has reduced the amount of time we spend in Family Council on calendar coordination so we can focus on other important family issues and goals.

Several family relation writer have proposed the use of Family Council to help resolve family conflicts.
